Tehsildar is primarily a revenue officer and is responsible for the collection of land revenue and other dues payable to the government. He is constantly on tour to keep in touch with subordinate revenue officials to observe the seasonal conditions and condition of crops to take note of the difficulties of the cultivators. He draws up reports and recommends remission or suspension of revenue, brings the land records up to date, sits in court to settle disputes regarding tenancy, arrears of rent, ejectment of tenants, and entries in account books. The duties of the Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar do not substantially differ except that a Tehsildar is vested with the powers of an Assistant Collector 1st grade, whereas a Naib-Tehsildar is vested with the powers of an Assistant Collector 2nd grade.
